Pocket Filters Splash Some Color Onto Your Photos

Are your Facebook photos of the same boring friends standing around drinking beer getting a bit drab? Photojojo's pocket-sized lens and flash color filters should jazz things up, letting you saturate your scenes with one of eight sturdy acrylic chips.

The filters can either be placed over either your camera's lens or flash, providing a fully or partially colorized picture, respectively. The flash-only effect is particularly interesting, casting colored light over objects in the foreground only, giving your pictures an otherworldly look.

The filters also open up all sorts of color experimentation—want to tint half your shot? Cover half the lens. Or use multiple filters to create beautiful gradients. At only $15 and small enough to fit in your pocket (or on your keychain), Photojojo's filters are an easy way to play with the images you create. [Photojojo via Wired]

The review Asus N82JV Notebook was published of April. It’s a multimedia laptop will provide good performance with Nvidia’s Optimus technology and a long battery life. The Asus N82JV has two version. The US vesion has been equipped with Core i7-620M (2.66 GHz) and the UK Core i5-520M (2.40 GHz).

According to the information collected from different sources found, it has the glossy 14 inch display in a ratio of 16:9 with a resolution of 1366×768 pixels. Prices as Review HP Pavilion dv4-2173nr 14.1-Inch Laptop for $749.99 at Amazon Marketplace

It looks much like an older model of the HP laptop we purchased a few years ago, except there are a few key differences. While the hardware seems to be more powerful, all of the possible advantages of that are destroyed by the black hole that is windows 7. The touch pad is separated from the buttons and is awkward, but that’s not nearly as irritating as a touch based switch for internet. That means there’s no manual override and viruses can remotely activate the internet as soon as my computer turns on – that makes me feel extra safe.

The mute button can with the wave of the hand, activate and not deactivate until you shut down and start over. This is an issue related to powering down and accidentally pushing buttons you aught not.

There’s also an irritating nightlight that NEVER EVER shuts off unless the computer is turned off completely. This of course makes me feel extra GREEN and must definitely save energy in some other dimension where Earth and Reality don’t coexist. As usual the sound plugs are in the front, rather than the side, making it more like a desktop, rather than a computer that sits on your lap. This is an issue for anyone who uses a laptop the way most people do, but is not a problem unique to HP.

Claudia Schiffer and Karl Lagerfeld Are Attacked by Fashion Editor of Black Lifestyle Magazine for Photo of Schiffer, Blacked-Up

I taken a lot of Pix in the last months – please tell me what you think:

Alliance Armament Full Auto 12 Ga. by Awesome Photography

{Homepage über Breakless Bikes

Claudia Schiffer has been attacked for offending black people after posing on a magazine cover made up as a black woman. The 39-year-old German supermodel wore black foundation and an afro-style wig in the photograph taken by fashion designer and photographer Karl Lagerfeld.

Lagerfeld had Schiffer made up as a black women in one of six photographs he took while putting together an advertising campaign for the vintage champagne Dom Perignon. The photos were published by German fashion magazine Stern Fotografie when it celebrated its 60th anniversary.

Accusations against Schiffer and Lagerfeld followed from Shevelle Rhule, the fashion editor of a London black lifestyle magazine, Pride. Ms Rhule said:

“It shows poor taste and it's offensive. There are not enough women of colour featured in mainstream magazines. This just suggests you can counteract the problem by using white models. I don't believe they deliberately set out to offend. They obviously see it as being arty and feel that they are pushing boundaries. But clearly no thought has been given to the history behind what they have done and the comparisons it draws with minstrel shows.”

To which I would reply: 'Shevelle, lighten up'. Her comment is the kind that perpetuates raw nerves about race and creates a path of spikey eggshells for people, black and white, to walk on. Society doesn't need race relations zealots, quangocrats or Pride fashion editors lecturing designers (or filmmakers or writers or rap singers…) on what they can or can't do. It's small-minded. Already an online magazine has responded to the photos with conformist knee-jerk political correctness by saying one of the other photos, of Schiffer as an Asian, is “just wrong”, scolding that Lagerfeld should have used more than one model in the interests of racial diversity.

Fashion, like fiction and film and other creative industries, should be free to play with any images it chooses. Did Ms Rhule also take offence at white French actor Gerard Depardieu recently playing mixed-race Alexander Dumas (using black make-up)? Or Eddie Murphy impersonating a white (jewish) person? Or black British actor Adrian Lester who played the white Danish prince, Hamlet? Or the black actor, David Oyelowo, who played white English king Henry VI?

Would she criticise images of Bob Dylan or the Rolling Stones dressed up as women? How about pantomime dames, women actors dressed as men, Eddie Izzard in frock and lipstick, comedians pretending to be children…?

As soon as you get into determining whether blacks can play whites and women can play men but not the other way round, you're proscribing the creative process and engaging in censorship. Clamping down on the arts in that way (even commercial arts like advertising) is as restricting as squashing free speech.

As for Rhule's comment that Lagerfeld and Schiffer were suggesting the photograph of a 'black' Schiffer would substitute for using black models in mainstream magazines – that's just plain foolish. Rhule then seems to have chucked minstrels into the discussion just for shock value.

In fact the photo was one of a series of six in which Lagerfeld was playing with Schiffer's image. Another showed her as a secretary, a third as an Asian woman. In a fourth she was dressed and made up as eighteenth century French queen, Marie Antoinette and in a fifth she was androgynous. The fashion shoot theme was fantasy and imagination. Lagerfeld wanted to play with Schiffer's face and Shiffer's image. He didn't want to use other models. He wasn't trying to portraying racial diversity – he was portraying imaginary Claudia Schiffers. And has every right to.

A spokesman for Lagerfeld responded to Rhule's criticism, saying she was taking them out of context: “The images were designed to reflect different men's fantasies. The pictures were not intended to offend, they were done very creatively and are some of Karl Lagerfeld's favourite images of Claudia. People should not jump to conclusions.”

Yet there are many people with vested interests in Britain and other liberal democracies who make a good living from jumping to conclusions and playing the race card in cases which can only trivialise genuine instances of racism. Political correctness about race and ethnicity has battened onto society like a barnacle on a boat. It would be a democratic step forward if those who have a professional interest in taking offence at 'racism' and other -isms would pick their battles more wisely.

It would also be good if the race relations industry ditched the term “people of colour”. What is it supposed to indicate?! What colour? Black? Dark brown? Sienna? All those and more? Does it imply that white people – with their variously pink, peachy, creamy, olive-toned, ugly red, bluey-white, brown or orangey skin – have no colour? Why aren't whites called “people of non-colour” then? Or “people of no-colour”?

Black and white are just words. They're quick and easy terms to use for those who want or need to indicate skin colour and they're neutral. People (like Ms Rhule perhaps) who want to take offence at one (and not the other) always will. But they're misguided. Countering racism is always worth doing. But cranking up and maintaining raw nerves unnecessarily does no-one any good. It just increases division between black and white and injects a zealous, scolding tone into debate which would benefit from more freedom, less 'sensitivity' and – in a case like the Schiffer/Lagerfeld photos – a bit of playfulness.

'La Photographie N'est Pas L'art' ('Photography is Not Art') is a book with photographs by avantgarde photographer Man Ray.

It's a “limited edition facsimile reprint of a book that was originally published by Guy Levis-Mano in France in 1937. The book is composed of twelve loose-leaf photographs within a portfolio style slipcase and includes a short, poetic text by the surrealist artist Andre Breton entitled 'convulsionaires'.

The collection is a conceptual work that encapsulates a wide range of subject matter including fashion, nature, architecture and portraiture. Providing a provocative counterpoint to the images are counterintuitive captions that disarm and disorientate the viewer.”

The book concerns itself with the question 'Is photography art?' a question (“as examined in the influential Paris magazine L’Art”), which was “hotly controversial during the first half of the 20th century”.

Man Ray himself proclaimed “photography is not art” in the “essay re-published here as an impeccable facsimile edition of the 1937 original”.

'La Photographie N’est Pas L’art' is an “important conceptual work” for anyone interested in photography and its evolution over the years as a medium and as an art-form, as well as anyone interested in the work of Man Ray.

First quote is from the photo-eye review of 'La Photographie N’est Pas L’art' by John Mathews; the quotations in the fourth paragraph is from the publisher's description; and the quotation in the last paragraph is from the photo-eye review by John Mathews.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2010: Last Chapter

Evra & Vidic - 2010 World Cup soccer qualifying match by Super MF

Dänemark Trikot kaufen

Group C is probably one of the easiest groups in the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Algeria and Slovenia barely qualified for this tournament, while USA did it quickly and easily. England is simply superior (at least in theory) than the rest of the group. The most complicated match for the English is going to be against USA, thanks to the tremendous growth that has taken place in recent years in the North American country.

WHAT TO THINK ABOUT THE GROUP:
Even though Slovenia and Algeria could give a surprise, it doesn't look like much trouble for USA and England. Both teams have great technique, nice plays and competitive players. Slovenia is a team that can put up a fight offensively, but it doesn't seem to have anything extraordinary to help them. Algeria, the African representative in this group could rely on its great defense and counter attack trying to beat the favorites of this group.

HOW THEY RANKED LAST APRIL:
FIFA ranks every international football team on the 28th of each month; so, the rank for these four teams during April 28th. 2010 was like this:

England ranked as number 8.
USA ranked as 14th.
Algeria ranked as number 31 of the world.
Slovenia ranked as number 23.

The numbers for May 28th. are going to show probably the same ranks, usually a team doesn't climb or loses many spots each month, if the any team ranks higher or lower is in an average of 3 spots. Meaning that USA was number 14 in April, but in May could be 11 or 17 on average.

2010 FIFA World Cup Schedule for USA:
6/12 England vs. USA Royal Bafokeng 2:00 p.m. EST/1:00 p.m. CST/11:00 a.m. PST
6/13 Algeria vs. Slovenia Peter Mokaba 7:00 a.m. EST/6:00 a.m. CST/4:00 a.m. PST
6/18 Slovenia vs. USA Ellis Park 9:30 a.m. EST/8:30 a.m. CST/6:30 a.m. PST
6/18 England vs. Algeria Green Point 2:00 p.m. EST/1:00 p.m. CST/11:00 a.m. PST
6/23 Slovenia vs. England Nelson Mandela 9:30 a.m. EST/8:30 a.m. CST/6:30 a.m. PST
6/23 USA vs. Algeria Loftus Versfeld 9:30 a.m. EST/8:30 a.m. CST/6:30 a.m. PST

BIDDING ODDS:

England vs. USA:
USA is the big favorite in this match, then a draw.

Algeria vs. Slovenia:
Algeria is favorite, then a slight advantage of the draw over Slovenia.

Slovenia vs. USA:
A draw is the main prediction of gamblers, then, Slovenia.

England vs. Algeria:
A draw, then England.

Slovenia vs. England:
The favorite is Slovenia, then a draw.

USA vs. Algeria:
Algeria is favorite, then a draw.

Betting odds in this group are giving 7 points to Algeria, USA 4 points, 1 point to England, and 4 points to Slovenia, making Algeria the first qualified team, then the battle between USA and Slovenia for the second ticket to the next round. However, don't get excited if your team is favorite in certain matches, gamblers usually go for the underdog of the match.

FIRST QUALIFIED:
Experts agree: “England hands crossed”, even if they lose against USA (something not likely) experts are positive that England can crush the next two teams to qualify as the first place.

SECOND QUALIFIED:
USA should have no problems to qualify to the next round. Algeria could give a battle if they win the match against Slovenia, the weakest link, but it seems unlikely that Algeria could beat either one, USA and England to get the second place of this group.

CHANCES TO QUALIFY TO THE 2ND. ROUND:
England 90.2%
USA 73%
Algeria 21%
Slovenia 15.9%

One of the biggest mismatches in FIFA World Cup history was on show at the Ellis Park Stadium in Johannesburg as world no.1 Brazil took on the lowest ranked team in the tournament, North Korea, more than 100 places below them. But on the pitch the difference hardly seemed to matter as Brazil won this extremely entertaining contest 2 – 1 with the North Koreans giving a very good account of themselves. All three goals came in the second half after a first half that saw the underdogs contain the favourites with defensive perfection. Maicon’s stunner ten minutes into the latter half broke the deadlock and a 2nd was added by Elano 17 minutes later. North Korea pulled one goal back in the dying minutes of the game via Yi-Jun Nam to provide us with quite a nerve-racking finish to what was perhaps the game of the tournament thus far.

Brazil were in the mood of making an example of their opponents North Korea on the night and hence started off with an extremely offensive formation with players of enviable attacking prowess. Luis Fabiano started up front on his own with Kaka and Robinho hovering around him to help out in case he ever required company. The experienced Gilberto Silva and Juvenuts midfielder Felipe Melo sat in front of the back four to provide cover while Elano marauded the right flank for the Samba Kings. North Korea brought in a 5 man defence in order to fend off the intimidating and scary attack the team sheet of their opponents displayed. The ‘Asian Wayne Rooney’ Jong Tae-Se started on his own up front with Hong Yong-Jo supporting him in a 4-man midfield.

The first few minutes of the game didn’t produce any clear cut chances but what was encouraging and also somewhat amusing to see was the fact that the North Koreans were taking the game to the overwhelming favourites on the night, Brazil. The Samba Kings had a couple of long distance efforts blocked away by the Korea goalkeeper Myong-Guk Ri but nothing really tested the 23-year old. Tae-Se showed some glimpses of his brilliance, skipping past defenders and taking the shot on, hardly afraid or intimidated by the big name players opposing him. The same attitude was shared by his teammates even though their formation reeked of nervousness, anxiety and probably even too much respect for the opposition.

Both teams were restricted to long range efforts with Brazil having some good build up play that just flattered to deceive. Maicon and Michel Bastos also came forward and played an active role in the 5-time World Champions’ efforts to break the deadlock. The latter even had a few punt shots on goal from a distance, and while blessed with a wicked left-foot, did not have ‘Roberto Carlos-esque’ accuracy. Brazil controlled possession by quite a margin restricting their opponents to counter attacks only, but failed to produce anything despite having the Jabulani for most of the first half between their feet.

North Korea executed their plans of pressing hard and keeping it tight at the back brilliantly, and the Brazilians seemed to be succumbing under the pressure applied by their opponents. Their lack of ideas with the final ball and sometimes, rather surprisingly, lack of quality in providing quality balls into the box also played a pivotal role in keeping the scoreboard quiet. Dunga’s team tried very hard to construct and implement play through the middle but North Korea put numbers on the ball and kept the Selecao at bay. The scoreboard flashed 0 – 0 at half time, but the North Koreans seemed to have won the first 45 minutes owing to their fantastic tactical superiority.

Brazil received a free kick just 5 minutes into the 2nd half after Kaka was brought down just a couple of yards outside the box. Michel Bastos stepped up to take the kick but his effort went missed by a meter or so and the score remained locked at 0 – 0. The Koreans first taste of World Cup action in 44 years turned bitter when Maicon gave Brazil the lead in the 55th minute. Elano set the Inter Milan full back through on the right, and his attempted cross fizzed past the oblivious North Korean goalkeeper and nestled into the just inside the post. Here comes more criticism for our favourite little ball, the Jabulani. Maicon struck it from quite a tight angle and it was another one of those supernatural goals that broke the deadlock in another tight affair in the tournament.

Luis Fabiano had a wonderful chance to make it 2 – 0 and once and for all put an end to this audacious performance from the Asians, but after controlling the pass from Robinho with his chest, the Sevilla striker sent the ball over the crossbar.

Brazil did double their lead in the 72nd minute via Galatasaray midfielder Elano. Robinho’s world class through ball found the midfielder with ounces of space in the box on the right and he made no mistake with the finish. Dunga in his usual unconventional attire was elated with what he had witnessed in the last 20 odd minutes. It was all Brazil after the goal as they looked to add a third to their evergrowing scoreline. With a minute of regulation time left on the clock and completely against the flow of play, North Korea pulled a goal back thanks to Ji-Yun Nam, whose finish after a neat little knockdown from Tae-Se cemented him and his team in Korean history forever.Yun Nam will enter those quiz question shot at school children and play an adventurous role in bedtime fairy tales, for slotting the ball with precision beyond Julio Caesar, who hardly had a touch on the ball all game. It proved to be too little too late for the North Koreans who would though still leave the stadium with their pride very much intact.

Brazil next take on the physical yet talented Ivory Coast team who carry the burden of all African hopes in the tournament. The Samba Kings looked quite impressive once they settled into the game and it will be interesting to see how they perform against Didier Drogba and the likes who will have a completely different approach to the game than that of North Korea. Brazil will have much more space to manoeuvre and enforce their style and tempo on the game but will also have a much much larger threat from the African country’s attacking force.

A Product Review of the HP Pavilion DV6830US 15.4″ Laptop: A Mid Range Consumer Notebook

The HP Pavilion HDX9010NR 20″ Entertainment Laptop is a laptop like none other. In reality it is really a compact desktop replacement. I'm going to go through this notebook with a fine tooth comb and let you know where it excels and where it might be a disappointment. I'm going to let you know if this notebook with a premium price is worth it or not and who would get the most out of this HP Pavilion laptop. Let's get started with the basics.

Hardware:

Screen Size: 20.1″ LCD

Storage: (2) 120GB hard drives (for a total of 240GB)

RAM: 2GB of RAM (this is expandable to 4)

Optical Drives: HD DVD drive (with an integrated burner CD R/RW and Dual layer DVD +/- R)

Tuner: HDTV TV tuner integrated

Graphics card: Mobility Radeon HD2600 XT (with 256MB of dedicated VRAM)

Size: 18.7″ x 13.4″ x 2.3″

Weight: 15.5lbs

Additional Components: Remote Control, Earphones

At first glance the screen is amazing. I mean it is one of the nicer displays I've seen. It rivals the nicest Sony Vaio or the top of the line Apple. The dedicated graphics card produces a native 720p resolution on the LCD panel pumping out a resolution of 1680×1050. Next the unique feature that really gets my attention is the hinged back. This is a great feature especially for a notebook that can and should be acting as a desktop replacement. This allows for the LCD to be adjusted in order to find the perfect viewing angle for everyone.

In my opinion this hefty notebook should be used as a desktop replacement. It is better than products like the iMac in my opinion because it can be folded up and put away giving you a clear desk to work on. The iMac desktop can't do that. Plus it can act as a television with the built in NTSC analog and ATSC digital tuner. It really is multipurpose and not only could it be the backbone of any entertainment system it literally could be the entertainment system (remote control included!).

It's also really much too large to transport around. It weighs a bulky 15.5lbs, so unless you're looking for a workout, this notebook isn't coming to class with you every day.

The dual hard drive configuration is a bit confusing however weight obviously wasn't an issue that went into the design of this notebook. The HP Pavilion HDX9010NR has plenty of hard drive space at 240 GB. The RAM at 2 GB is adequate, and if you find you need more it is expandable. Well now let me get to the connections.

Connectivity:

4 2.0 USB ports (You can use these to connect your iPod or printer or whatever)

1 FireWire port (This can be used to transfer digital video files at high speeds, like off of your digital camcorder)

Audio input

SVideo Input

2 Audio out jacks / 1 Mic jack

1 VGA output (for your typical monitor)

1 HDMI port (use this to connect to your HDTV)

1 S-Video (Use this to connect to a projector)

1 ExpressCard 54 slot

5 in 1 card reader (you can use this for the solid state memory you use with your digital camera or mobil phone / PDA whatever.

Well, I see everything I expect to and more. I don't know why you would need to VGA output because I doubt you have a monitor larger than the 20.1″ LCD included on here, but its there. The 4 USB ports is 1 more than average. The HDMI output is great, if you want to use this to stream to your HD TV. Not connection is missing. The HP Pavilion HDX9010NR notebook is truly setup.

I foresee the absolute best function of this laptop being in the dorm room. It is not only a fully functional gaming machine, video machine, homework machine, it is also the TV complete with remote. All of which weighs about 16lbs (much less than your standard 20″ LCD I might add) which can be easily removed from the desk to return your writing surface. It won't disappoint if you have the money to pick this notebook up. In fact it's recently been on sale below $1000 off of retail. I would seriously consider this notebook in the $2000-2500 range. It originally retailed at $3500!

Mini notebook computers are one of the newest modes of computer technology on the market today. Laptop notebooks have been on the market for several years and are very popular among commuters, students, and business men and women on the go. The smaller versions of these machines are becoming popular as well and are available from most major computer manufacturers, including Dell.

Currently, Dell has only one model of mini notebook computers, or netbooks, the Mini 10. It is a member of the Inspiron family of computers and sold online and at some mini notebook computers stores. The keyboard on this model is only slightly smaller than the keyboard on a typical laptop, which is great for people with larger fingers who might have trouble with the smaller keyboards on many minis. The screen on this computer is about ten inches and it is very lightweight. Dell suggests that the Mini 10 be used as a companion PC rather than one’s sole computer. Although minis are fully functional, they often do not reach the capabilities of traditional laptops. Still, they are very useful for web surfing, word processing, and more.

The Mini 10 is available in ten colors and over two hundred designs. It can be customized with a variety of options, such as a DVD/CD drive. However, it comes standard with many features, including wi-fi capabilities. These computers come with the popular Windows XP operating system. A one hundred and sixty gigabyte hard drive and one gigabyte of memory are featured on these notebooks. The six cell battery is said to last for five to six hours, perfect for travel. A Mini Ten costs as little as about two hundred and fifty dollars, but increases in price with added options. Customers who have purchased this model have given it a score of four point three out of five stars.

The $529 Dell Inspiron i1545-4266IBU is available in a rainbow of colors, but no matter which hue you choose, the polished design masks a substandard feature set. We love the fit and feel of this budget laptop–comfortable keyboard, roomy display, still light enough for daily travel–but competing models offer better features for the same money. By comparison, the $529 Asus K60I-RBBBR05 boasts an LED-backlit display and Wireless-N Wi-Fi–two features absent on the Inspiron i1545-4266IBU–plus double the hard-drive capacity. Also absent on the Dell and found in abundance on the Asus, however, is bloatware.

The Inspiron i1545 is about the cheapest dual-core laptop you’ll encounter, and though it delivers good performance for the price, laptops with Intel’s latest Core i3 are tempting because they can be had for less than $100 more. The Gateway NV7915u, for example, features the Core i3 330M chip and costs only $599.

The Inspiron i1545 is available in one of six colors; we reviewed the Ice Blue model. The light-blue lid has a glossy coating and a small Dell logo at its center. Inside, the screen bezel and keyboard tray are a piano black, and the keyboard and touch pad have a matte finish. You won’t find any media control keys; you’ll need to use the Function keys to play, pause, fast-forward, rewind, and adjust the volume instead. The row of Function keys actually operates like a strip of media control keys because they are mapped so that you don’t need to press the Fn button to skip a track, lower the screen brightness, or mute the volume, for example. Only a power button resides above the keyboard, lending a very clean and simple look to laptop.

In keeping with the clean design, the laptop ships with a pristine hard drive devoid of the bloatware found on other mainstream laptops and particularly budget models. The only trials you’ll find are useful: 60 days of Microsoft Office 2007 and McAfee. The hard drive is smaller than you’ll find on competing budget laptops. It’s a 250GB hard drive, smaller than the 320GB drive found on most models at this price and half the capacity of the drive on the Asus K60I.

One flaw with the design is the display hinges. The hinges aren’t sturdy enough to keep the screen firmly rooted in place. Our thunderous typing resulted in the screen wobbling. In the course of writing this review, we experienced also some skittish behavior in Word, with keyboard shortcuts engaging at random. We thought a stuck Ctrl key was to blame, but after a thorough investigation, we were unable to pinpoint the cause. It’s likely specific to our review unit, but it bears mentioning.

The keyboard is exceedingly comfortable. The keys feel roomy and offer good travel. Unlike many 15.6-inch laptops such as the Asus K60I and the Toshiba Satellite L505-ES5018, the Inspiron i1545 does not feature a dedicated number pad. We don’t think this omission is necessarily a bad thing since most people won’t find much use for it. Without it, the keyboard is centered below the display and not a single key is shortened.

The touch pad blends in with the piano black wrist rest. It’s demarcated by a matte finish and a slight recession. The two mouse buttons are like buttah: soft without offering too much travel and nearly silent when pressed. We greatly prefer them to the stiff, somewhat clacky mouse buttons on the Asus K60I.

The Inspiron i1545 weighs 5.7 pounds, average for a 15.6-inch laptop. It’s the biggest-size laptop we recommend for daily commutes. It’s a great size for home use, with 13.3- and 14.1-inch laptops saving you a pound or more of travel weight. The Inspiron i1545’s display features a typical 1,366×768-pixel native resolution for the size. Movies look great on the wide-screen display; colors are vivid and the glossy screen coating helps smooth edges. The screen is also a good size for productivity, providing decent room for working with multiple open windows. The Asus K60I, however, features an LED-backlit display, which is more energy efficient than a traditional LCD lit by fluorescent tubes. As you’ll see below, the Asus K60I offers better battery life despite using a slightly lower-capacity battery.

The Dell Inspiron i1545 features merely an average pair of laptop stereo speakers. They reach a decent level at max volume, but the sound is predictably tinny. They’ll suffice for YouTube video and DVDs, but headphones are the better option for music playback.

The Inspiron i1545 supplies an average collection of ports and connections. You’ll find three USB 2.0 ports, a VGA port, an Ethernet jack, an ExpressCard/34 slot, a multiformat media card reader, and headphone and microphone jacks. Absent are HDMI and eSATA connections. We would have liked to have seen HDMI, which can be found on only slightly more expensive laptops such as the Gateway NV7915u and the HP Pavilion dv4-2145dx. Lastly, though nearly every other laptop at this price point features Wireless-N Wi-Fi, the Inspiron i1545 supplies only 802.11b/g connectivity.

The laptop features the Intel Pentium T4400 processor, a dual-core chip clocked at 2.2GHz. It’s found in many chips because it is an entry-level dual-core processor, a rung below Intel’s venerable Core 2 Duo line that delivers excellent bang for the buck. Budget buyers will find that it provides more than enough muscle for general use, including heavy multitasking scenarios. It finished within a percentage point or two of the Asus K60I and the Toshiba Satellite L505-ES5018 on CNET Labs’ application benchmarks, not surprising result given that all three feature the same Pentium T4400 processor. The Asus has 4GB of memory to the Dell’s 3GB, but the Dell’s memory is faster at 800MHz compared with 667MHz on the Asus. The difference in memory speed offsets the difference in memory amount, according to our test results.

Though we have no trouble recommending a Pentium T4400-based budget laptop for general use, we would also point out that laptops with the Core i3 processor, one of the successors to the Core 2 Duo, cost less than $100 more. For example, the Gateway NV7915u costs $599 and uses the Core i3 330M CPU. The Gateway finished our multitasking benchmark with a 30 percent faster score than the Inspiron i1545. That’s a significant number when you consider the laptops are only $70 apart in price. The performance difference on single applications is less drastic; the Gateway finished the Photoshop and iTunes benchmarks 12 percent and 4 percent faster than the Inspiron i1545, respectively.
